Venkatamma (name changed), who was from a small town outside of Bengaluru, had been dealing with arthritis for the previous six years. She is completely wheelchair-bound at the age of only 38 and has deformed fingers, stiff knees, and swollen joints. She is unable to move her knees in the slightest because of the excruciating pain in her joints.

When Venkatamma sought relief from her symptoms at Vaidya Healthcare in Perumbavoor, Kerala, her symptoms were quickly identified as being brought on by arthritis. After performing several blood tests, Dr. Nimisha Kureekad, Medical Officer at Vaidya Healthcare, confirmed the diagnosis.

"Venkatamma is one of the numerous patients who visit us for arthritis treatment. Her case was more challenging, though, because her arthritis had gotten so bad that it required special care,” says Dr. Nimisha. Even though Venkatamma had been experiencing pain and stiffness in her joints for a while, she never visited a doctor. "Whenever the pain became unbearable, I would take a painkiller and rest for a few hours. I didn't understand how those few hours of rest turned into a few days until I realized I couldn't even get out of bed one day," says Venkatamma.

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that causes swelling, redness, and stiffness in the joints. Other typical symptoms of this condition include pain and a restricted range of motion in the affected joints. According to Dr. Nimisha, there are numerous different types of arthritis, and each type has a different course of treatment. The most prevalent types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, which results from cartilage degeneration, rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disorder, gouty arthritis, which is brought on by an increase in blood uric acid, psoriatic arthritis, which is brought on by psoriasis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, which affects children.

“Since arthritis is a progressive condition, our main goal in treating it is to stop it from getting worse,” says Dr. Nimisha. The first 14 days of the 60-day treatment plan are spent doing Rooksha therapies without the use of any oils. This includes applying ground herbs and washing them with salt water once it has dried (Lepanam), applying a poultice of ground herbs (Kizhi), pouring a herbal decoction (Dhara), etc. These rooksha treatments relieve the patient of the main symptoms while reducing joint swelling and inflammation.

Additionally, arthritis negatively affects digestion, which results in appetite loss. Internal medications are administered during the first few days to strengthen the body's digestive capacity (Agnideepthi). This guarantees that oral medications for the treatment of arthritis can be properly digested and absorbed by the body.

After 14 days, once the visible symptoms of arthritis come down, enema (Vasthi) treatment begins. Along with this, various poultices (Kizhi) and oil therapies are applied for the following 15 days. Later, physiotherapy and lifestyle changes are implemented to strengthen muscles, stimulate nerves, and enhance immunity and mental health.

"Since Venkatamma was young and in good health overall, we could largely reverse her condition. However, because calcification had already begun as a result of years of carelessness, we were only able to do so much to treat her deformed bones,” says Dr. Nimisha. Nevertheless, it was a proud moment for the entire Vaidya Healthcare team when Venkatamma returned home unaided after 60 days of intensive therapy.

According to Dr. Nimisha, arthritis is a chronic condition that can have an effect on every aspect of your life. However, its progression can be halted if detected early and treated using Ayurvedic techniques.
